Chapter Forty-Seven

Ziggy

I wake to soft voices and the smell of paint.

“…listen to…”

“…understand. What’s going…?”

“…think I knew, I’d…”

I almost slip under again, but a wrenching sob forces my eyes open against their will. I push myself up, blinking hard. My eyes water, burning as if I haven’t slept for weeks.

I know I nodded off once or twice, but I kept waking up. Drawn from sleep by the constant reply of memories.

Colby’s gun.

The truck, falling down that gorge.

Lying on Kane, staring at eyes dark with regret.

Colby’s smile, a second before he punched me in the gut.

And then they would start again. Colby’s gun, and the truck flying into the gorge.

My stomach cramps, but luckily there’s nothing left to puke up.

My palm is pressing on something cool, silky, smooth. I look down, barely able to take in the blue pillow under me before another hysterical wail tears through the air. The sound makes every hair on my body stand up straight. I wipe my eyes with the heels of my palms and try getting to my feet but my legs buckle under me before I make it higher than a crouch. I fall back into a multitude of silk pillows, something tickling my inner wrist.

A fur blanket. Dark gray, speckled with white. It’s so soft, so gloriously silky. Rabbit fur? My mind shifts to the heap of rabbit pelts Dev had been working on in the kitchen. No…these couldn’t be—

“Ziggy.”

The muted voice draws my attention away. There’s little light in this place. Enough for me to make out shapes and colors, but that’s about it. It’s impossible to make out what time of day it is. It could have been an hour after I got here, or several.

“Hey…can you hear me? Ziggy?”

My eyes lift and reluctantly latch onto a shadowy figure a few feet away. I tip forward onto my hands and knees and crawl closer.

I recognize Hunter’s voice.

The closer I get, the more I can see. He’s gripping the chain link fence between us with white-tipped fingers, his face right against it. Eyes wide, red-rimmed. There’s a bruise on his jaw.

“Hi,” I say. I come a little closer, and then touch the fence between us. “How are you?”

Dark creases appear in the corner of his eyes. “Are you okay?”

“Sure.” My eyes still don’t want to focus properly. And my thoughts are like non-existent. “Why is MJ so sad?”

I’m sure it was her I heard earlier. She’d been talking to Hunter, then she started crying.

“Did you have a fight?” I ask.

Hunter’s eyes are going wider and wider, his mouth turning into a thin line. “Did you hit your head?”

Then, before I can answer, he holds up a hand. “How many fingers?”

I frown at him. “Three.”

He drops his eyes, and something rolls over the floor. “I brought you water.”

“Thank you.”

“Are you sure you’re okay, Z—” Hunter’s voice goes funny, and when I look up, he squeezes his eyes shut and turns to wipe his cheek on his sleeve. “I’m so fucking sorry.” The words tumble out all on top of each other.
